Skincare Secrets: How to clean your makeup brushes

You want clear skin? When’s the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes?

As a model I’ve seen and experienced first hand what damage the usage of a dirty brush can cause to the face. In fact my worst nightmare is having a dirty brush anywhere near my face including my own makeup brushes. After dealing with painful cystic acne I learned the importance of cleaning my brushes as it transformed my skin. Instead of getting a new breakout the second I wanted a little coverage I noticed how less frequent my skin issues were after these hygienic practices and here’s how I do it:

I recommend two methods of cleaning. The first being spot cleaning, and the second a deeper clean. Both sanitary and effective at making sure you have healthy skin.

To spot clean I use a backstage secret and industry favorite: @cinemasecretspro brush cleaner. Start with a small bowl and 1/4 of the solution. Quickly dip the brush and wipe with a towel. Be sure not to oversaturate your brushes or they will become quite dry. This is an easy way to sanitize your brushes and not have to deal with the lengthy deep cleansing process.

Deep cleaning is always necessary even if the event may be tedious at times. It’s recommended to deep clean your brushes every 7 to 10 days to avoid bacteria and potential harmful infections. I personally like to use a gentle antibacterial bar hand soap. I start with a silicone mitt, they are reusable and easy to use. The different textures allow you to get into every crevice. I lather my brush with the hand soap and massage the bristles through the textured mitt. Being sure to dry my brushes on a clean hand towel horizontally to ensure they remain intact.

Be sure to do the same with your beauty blenders. And to replace them as needed, might we suggest a compostable option when the time comes?

I hope this helps you to learn how to cleanse your brushes or motivates you to do so if you haven’t in awhile. We are all worthy of clear, beautiful skin but we need to love ourselves in the process. Don’t look at this as a chore but as just another way you’re showing up as your higher self.
